Great video where Gary Taubes discusses the low carb approach and explains why fats are good for you. Only 15 mins long this time. I particularly like it when he discusses the steak, and explains that it is mostly monounsaturated fats, which is equivalent to olive oil.

Food

Its my birthday today so I will be having drinks later. But for the food this is what I ate. I had a big 30g dose of fish oil this morning. Then I had a salad with some watercress, eggs, almonds, lime juice, olive oil, tomato, spanish onion and garlic.

I like the look I get (as if I have two heads) when I tell people that pork fat, aka LARD, is nearly half monounsaturated fatty acids and that it is a staple food in Italy – but the for NC (nutritionally correct) reasons, olive oil gets all the credit.

Actually, when I was in Tuscany and Rome, Italy last summer I was astounded at the amount of refined starch and sugar they eat and how many clearly overweight, unhealthy, and diabetic-looking people there were (and I mean the Italians, not the tourists). I hear the Italians’ diets are much worse than other Mediterranean countries, though. I can see why.

Happy Birthday! Hope it’s a good one! Actually as I’m writing this it’s 11:30pm in NZ – still out celebrating? :)

Anna – I remember reading a book – Junk Food Nation I think it was where the author tells of an old woman in Mexico with the smoothest, softest skin he had ever seen. He asked her what she cooked with and she said lard. What if EVERYTHING you hear about health, diet and nutrition is WRONG? The more I read, the more I question the diet/nutrition authorities.
